Refractive Surgery

What to Expect and FAQs

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE?
After your eye has been completely numbed using eye drop anesthesia, an eyelid holder will be placed between your eyelids to prevent you from blinking. Next, we create a protective flap in the cornea. During this process, you may feel a little pressure. After the flap has been created, the laser will reshape the cornea while you look directly at a target light. This whole process usually takes less than a minute. Then, the protective flap is folded back in place, where it bonds securely without the need for stitches. After LASIK, some patients report a slight discomfort that usually goes away within 12 to 24 hours.

STEP BY STEP:

  1. Anesthetic drops are applied to the eye.
  2. For LASIK, a protective hinged flap is created by the Femtosecond laser and gently lifted by the surgeon, revealing the inner corneal tissue. PRK (also known as Flapless LASIK or Advanced Surface Ablation) does not require a flap.
  3. The inner corneal layer is reshaped with the laser to correct your eye’s imperfections.
  4. The surgeon gently replaces the flap and aligns it to its original position. It heals naturally and securely.
  5. Some patients feel slight irritation for a few hours, but most are quite comfortable after a nap and rest.

A TYPICAL PRE- AND POST-OP SCHEDULE:

  1. Discontinue contact lens wear.
  2. Have initial evaluation and consultation.
  3. On surgery day, allow approximately one hour for your center visit. Rest for the remainder of the day.
  4. Have one-day post-operative checkup. Resume most normal activity.
  5. Have one-week, one-month, three-month, and six-month checkups.
  6. Undergo regular eye examine one year after surgery.

IS LASER VISION CORRECTION SAFE?
The risk of having a complication from laser vision surgery is less than 1%. In fact, the risk of developing a sight-threatening infection from wearing contacts is greater than it is from having refractive surgery. Complications, though rare, can usually be successfully treated.

DOES THE PROCEDURE HURT?
Although you may feel some slight pressure around the eye, you should not have any pain during the procedure. With LASIK, pain after the procedure is uncommon, but can be treated with drops or prescription Tylenol.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
The actual procedure takes approximately five minutes per eye.

CAN I HAVE BOTH EYES DONE ON THE SAME DAY?
Most of our patients have LASIK on both eyes done the same day. Every patient has the option to have each eye done on separate days, if that is their preference. Patients who have PRK generally have each eye done on separate days.

HOW SOON CAN I RETURN TO WORK?
Patients who choose LASIK or PRK can often return to work the next day.

CAN I BE GUARANTEED 20/20 VISION?
No one can guarantee a 20/20 outcome. However, studies have shown up to 98% of patients achieve 20/40 vision or better, which allows for legal driving and playing sports, and satisfies most police or fire department regulations for functioning without corrective lenses.

HOW DO I KNOW I AM A CANDIDATE FOR LASER SURGERY?
In general, candidates for laser surgery must be 18 years or older, have stable vision for a year prior to the procedure, and be free of certain diseases. Free refractive consultations are available at our offices. Please use our Contact Page to request a free screening appointment.

HOW LONG HAVE YOUR DOCTORS BEEN PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE?
The physicians at SoCal Eye have been performing refractive surgery since 1987. They have performed thousands of LASIK procedures and are certified in LASIK, PRK, Astigmatic PRK, Radial Keratotomy, and Astigmatic Keratotomy procedures.
